Answer :-

Metals →Basic in nature

Non - metals → Acidic in nature

When metals reacts with oxygen they form metal oxide which is basic in nature.

If the oxides of metal is dissolved in water they form corresponding metal Hydroxide.

Alkalis :- Those metal hydroxides which are soluble in water is known as alkalis.

Ex :- NaOH, KOH

The reaction can be written as following:-

 Na + O_2 \rightarrow Na_2O

Na_2O + H_2O \rightarrow NaOH + H_2

Test :- When the aqueous solution of metal hydroxide is test by red litmus paper it get converts in to blue lithmus.

When Non - metal reacts with oxygen they form non - metallic oxides which is basic in nature and when their oxides are dissolved in water they form corresponding acids.

Ex:-

 C + O_2 \rightarrow CO_2

CO_2 + H_2O \rightarrow H_2CO_3

Test :- When aqueous solution of non - metal oxides are tested by blue lithmus paper it convert in to red lithmus paper.
