What happens when metals react with water and also state why non metals
generally do not react with water? Support your answer with proper chemical
equations.

Metals react with water to form hydroxide, hydrogen gas and heat is evolved. The heat evolved in not sufficient for hydrogen to catch fire. Ca starts floating because bubbles of hydrogen gas formed stick to the surface of metal.

Non-metals react with oxygen to form acidic oxides or neutral oxides. Reaction of non-metals with water: They do not react with water (steam) to evolve hydrogen gas.

Equation:

  • Metal + water --> Metal hydroxide + hydrogen
