Oxidising agent is the chemical which itself undergoes reduction reaction and forces other to accept electrons or to form bond with oxygen i.e to get oxidised.
Examples of strong oxidising agents are - Alkaline KMnO4 and acidified K2Cr2O7.
When an oxidising agent is added to propanol then an oxidation reaction takes place and propanoic acid is formed as a product.
CH3CH2CH2OH + oxidising agent ==> CH3CH2COOH
