A dilute ferrous sulphate solution was gradually added to the beaker containing acidified permanganate solution. The light purple colour of the solution fades and finally disappears....

Hey mate!!!!

In acidic medium ie., acidified KMnO4 oxidises FeSO4 to Fe2(SO4)3 and it itself gets reduced to MnSO4.

2 KMnO4 + 3 H2SO4====> K2SO4+ 2MnSO4 + 3 H2O + 5(O)

2 FeSO4 + H2SO4=> Fe2(SO4)3 + H2O So here KMnO4 will get reduced to MnSO4. FeSO4, will get oxidised to Fe2(SO4)3.

The ionic equation is

MnO4– + 8H+ + 5e ===> Mn2+ + 4 H2O

Hope it helps you..
