A displacement reaction takes place but only if metal is more active than the metal in the salt.

If it is the same metal then ions in the solution deposit on the metal and metal atoms ionise. This reaction is in equilibrium.

If you mean a different metal than the salt then the metal may displace the metal ions in solutions if it has higher negative reduction potential than the other element
