Both metal carbonates and bicarbonates get readily decomposed by mineral acids with evolution of carbon dioxide (CO2) bubbles. When hydrochloric acid is added to sodium carbonate, brisk effervescence of CO2 occurs, along with the formation of sodium chloride and water.
