when steam is passed over it it cgange into its oxide and this is called rusting of iron..

We know that iron gets rusted in presence of moisture.

So when steam is passed through red hot iron, the iron is changed to a new chemical substance called rust along with the release of Hydrogen gas.

The balanced chemical reaction is given blelow:

3Fe + 4H2O= Fe3O4 + 4H2

Water, in room temperature does not react with iron, it is steam that reacts with iron, that too in the red hot condition.
