What happens when sulphur burns in the presence of oxygen ? how will you show that the compound formed in this reaction is acidic in nature ??

Heya,

When sulphur reacts with oxygen, it forms sulphur dioxide.

The reaction is as follows:-

S + O2 -------> SO2

One proof that it is acidic is that we have learnt that non-metal oxides are acidic.

But to prove that let's react this oxide with water:-

SO2 + H2O ------>H2SO3

H2SO3 is sulphurous acid.

So we can conclude that it is an acidic oxide.
