sulphur is heated with NaOH (aq). solution : sulphur reacts with sodium hydroxide (strong base) to produce sodium sulphide, sodium thiosulfate and water. it is disproportionation reaction. here sulphur oxidizes from zero to + 4 in sodium thiosulfate and reduces from zero to - 2 in sodium sulphide.
