The magnesium reacts with the steam to form magnesium oxide which is basically in nature. It burns with a dazzling white flame. Magnesium does not react work water at room temperature, only steam.

When the coil of magnesium is heated in steam, thick precipitate of magnesium hydroxide is formed and hydrogen gas us released which burns with a pop sound when a burning splinter is brought near it.
