Respiration simply means breathing in fresh air and using it for bodily functions and then exhaling out waste left out, i.e. CO2 (major component). When we inhale fresh air our lungs separate out Oxygen from it and then heart supplies this Oxygen to whole body through blood vessels, blood vessels use this Oxygen to break down sugars and release energy. But, the main or the basic definition of respiration is taking in fresh air, utilising the Oxygen in it for breaking down complex sugars and obtaining energy and then exhaling out the waste components like CO2.

When you breathe in, the air first travels into your mouth and nose. From there it goes into your trachea—also called your windpipe—and then travels through tubes called airways, all the way down into your lungs. Air contains oxygen, and once inside the lungs, the oxygen can travel through the bloodstream to wherever in the body it’s needed.
