What happens when you put oil on paper?
The surface tension of the oil is lower than cellulose, so the oil wets the cellulose, driving the air out of the matrix and forming a smooth surface at the two sides of the paper.
OR
"The oil, grease, or fat has about the same index of refraction as paper," says Scheckel. ... Most of the light that would be scattered from the not-oiled paper is now transmitted through the paper." Water has a lower index of refraction than paper fibers, which is why it generally does not make paper transparent.
