ZnCO₃ , when heated in the absence of air , gets converted to ZnO , and CO₂ gas is also evolved.
This process , of converting carbonates ores into oxides , in the absence of air ( limited supply) , is known as calcination.
Heat
ZnCO₃ ------------> ZnO + CO₂
This metal oxide , is later on converted to metal , by reducing it with Carbon.
ZnO + C ----> Zn + CO
