In DC machines, the induced(produced) voltage in the armature is always alternating in nature irrespective of the type of field you provide i.e. either rotating or stationary. You only need to make sure that anyone of either field or armature should be stationary while the other is rotatory.However, it is the ‘commutation’ which changes the nature of current from AC to DC, with the help of brushes, as output.You know that there are two brushes attached to the shaft of the DC machine. These brushes come into operation for each half cycle alternatively of the induced AC armature current making it DC at the output.
