temples were central to society and economy of that particular regions as they performed a large number of functions.to cater the needs of temples and pilgrims, people of different professions came there . they were pilgrims, weavers, dancers, and many more. this led to the growth of town. such towns are called temple towns , 

kanchipuram, somnath, mathura, madurai were some famous temple towns.
