hey mate!!
the valency i.e the shells in the outer most shells of electrons help in determining the formula of an ionic compound .
for example, ws have to make magbesium chloride
magnesium has 12 valence elctrons =2,8,2 , thus its valency is 2
chlorine has 17 valence elctrons=2,8,7 , thus its valency is 3
now , in magnesium chloride , we will share 1 electron each with 2 atoms chlorine to full their valence shell , thus the compound become mgcl2
hope it helped!!
