Sodium and Potassium reacts with water to evolve hydrogen gas which immediately catches fire producing a lot heat . it is an exothermic reaction . sodium when reacting with water is highly exothermic process and h2 released which is enough to burn it.

Answer:

Metal oxides that are soluble in waterdissolve in it to further form metal hydroxide. Metals like potassium and sodium react violently with cold water. In case of sodium and potassium, the reaction is so violent and exothermic, that evolved hydrogen immediately catches fire."
