Mrs. S was the narrator's mother. She was a very simple and humble lady. She trusted her friend Mrs. Doling blindly. During the commencement of the war, she left all her belongings with her. She gave all her precious and valuable things with Mrs. Doling on the promise that she will return back her belongings after the war. Mrs. Doling, on the other hand, was one of the old acquaintance of Mrs. S. When Mrs. S's daughter came after the war to take back her mother's belongings, Mrs. Doling was not willing to give back those things. She deceived her and betrayed Mrs. S by not returning back her belongings.
