All matter is made up of small particles called atom. In earlier times it was believed that atoms cannot be divided further, so they kept the name atom( atomos Greek word meaning indivisible).

Atoms can also be defined as the smallest particle which takes part in a chemical reaction. Two or more atoms together combine to form a molecule.

Now, we have found that atoms can be divided into three sub particles. They are:-

1. Proton - positively charged particles.
2. Electron - Negatively charged particles.
3. Neutrons- Neutral in nature.
