The narrator is seeing those boys as matured ones. They are not little boys in front of narrator but Two gentlemen

The two boys were very happy with their jobs . They don't want to gain sympathy for others. They loved her sister very much. Their nature was good. They don't want to share their problems with someone. They were eager to do all sort of job.

The author was kind and compassionate. He was also very friendly. He could easily become friends with the two boys. When the boys requested him for a ride, he readily agreed even though he had to drive them himself. He was moved by the brothers' story. His attitude towards the brothers reflects his humane nature.
