the society in Rameswaram was very rigid in social segregation. Caste system was lrevalent and religious discrimination too, as seen in Kalam's new teacher who could not stonach a Brahmin and Muslim sitting togther. also, Sivasubramania Iyer's wife who did not want a Muslim in her ritually pure kitchen. But Kalam's family was secular and did not beleive in discrimination.
