Kathe Kollwitz was born in 1867 in Konigsberg. She studied art in Berlin and got married to Dr Karl Kollwitz. In 1895, she gave birth to her second son, Peter. She taught in Berlin School of Women Artists from 1898 to 1903.

In 1914, her second son Peter was killed in Flanders. He was among the young German men who volunteered to go to war. Kathe Koowitz believed that the older generation had a hand in motivating the young men to go to war. 

In Kathe Kollwizt's own words she believed;

She shared with her son Peter, the vision of an official Germany- a Fatherland: and this inspired her son and many young men to volunteer. They were filled with patriotism, the love for an independent Germany, a commandment and sense of duty towards their Fatherland- Germany.

Eighteen years later she completed her memorial of her son; she placed a sculpture of two old parents mourning their son. She then placed them on their son's grave. To date that remains the only reminder of the sacrifice that many German young men made, for a cause Kathe Kollwitz later says "his idealism was misplaced, that his sacrifice was for nothing"
