Please understand first that the need for sleep is largely genetic, it is more similar to height than to weight. You cannot "starve" the body of sleep and make it get used to it. It is perhaps most similar to IQ: You can change it a bit over time, but only within a natural range. So if you are an average person who normally needs 7-8 hours of sleep, this question is similar to a person of average IQ (100) asking how to get an IQ of 180. But if you feel rested after 5 hours of sleep, it may be that you can get it down to 4 over time, although it may be difficult without access to prescription drugs.
Those who sleep 4 hours a night for months or years tend to have two things in common: They have a natural lower need for sleep, and they are burning with passion for something. Even a normal person tends to sleep less when in love, but this is temporary. If you work or study a topic that you love and that you greatly enjoy, you will lose energy more slowly during the day, compared to doing something unpleasant.
When cutting sleep time, first you should have a good idea of when your natural sleep time is. You will want to go to bed at the normal time but get up earlier. If possible, meditate every morning. If you don't follow a religious or esoteric tradition, you can still practice a scientific form of meditation, and / or use brainwave entrainment. It is often said that you can get up an hour earlier in the morning, meditate for half an hour, and still be more rested and alert than if you slept that extra hour but skipped meditation.
Sleeping an hour in the early afternoon can also be worth an hour and a half in the morning. So it is usually possible to reduce your total sleep somewhat with proper planning. But it is not a good idea to reduce sleep drastically. It harms your immune system, saps your willpower, makes your decisions gradually more irrational, and makes you a hazard in the traffic. Be careful
