Can a tank the size of the P.1000 Ratte be created?

Well, it is definitely possible to create a working and operational tank the size of the P1000 Ratte especially with today’s technology. I’d even be willing to bet that given enough time and effort, a tank that size would’ve been possible in WW2.

However, there are some serious issues that come with making a tank this large that makes the venture completely impractical.

I’ll use the Maus to demonstrate my point. Weighing in at almost 200 tonnes, it was the heaviest tank have ever been built.

With this kind of weight, the tank was extremely under-powered and had enormously high ground pressure. The weight limited the logistics of the tank. It was completely unable to cross bridges forcing it to use a snorkle in the event of crossing rivers. The tank was extremely slow and was mechanically unreliable.

All these issues come from the heaviest tank ever built. Now imagine the problems that come with a tank more than 5 times its weight.

The sheer weight of the tank would’ve meant that it would sink into almost any kind of terrain it travelled on. It would be incredibly slow and it would be limited to large open fields.

Even though the tank would have decent armour, it’s huge size means it would be immediately targeted with airstrikes and missiles. It would be destroyed before it saw any enemy ground targets.

The tank would also be immensely expensive to maintain and run. A loss would be extremely difficult to replace.

So building a tank the size of a Ratte is definitely possible. However it is an incredibly pointless and impractical venture.
