Using Quadratic Formula or Sridharacharya formula : Discriminant = b^2 - 4ac can tell whether the roots of the quadratic equation will be real, imaginary or equal to zero. Case 1 : When D is positive then the roots are real and different . Case 2 : When D is equal to zero then roots are real, equal and equal to zero . Case 3 : When D is negative then roots are imaginary because there is no number whose square is a real number.
