The Mariner is old and wise. His wisdom comes from a lifetime of penance. He learned in the worst way the folly of killing an albatross. An intoxicated old man grabbing and forcing you to listen to a crazy story may seem on the creepy side but this old dude had something to him. I imagine he looked like that old captain from those frozen fish stick boxes. So if you imagined him like that with a story about a dead bird, some sailor ghosts and stormy seas, the experience might almost seem magical. The Mariner was paying for his sins and, judging by his cautionary tale, I would never ever shoot an albatross.
