Haroun notices the greenish-yellow mist in the Valley of K smells like sadness and gloom, and he tells his father it is a "Mist of Misery." But Mr. Buttoo objects, blaming the smell on Haroun and denying that the valley is a place of misery. He claims people have been making up bad stories about him, which is why he'd wanted to hire Rashid—to tell happy stories about him instead. The people would believe the stories, he says, and vote for him. Just as he says this, however, another hot wind blows, sweeping the mist away. The wind burns their faces and the water becomes "choppy and wild." "This must be the Moody Land," Haroun exclaims, referring to one of his father's most popular stories about a land that changed with the moods of its residents. But Rashid tells him that the "Tale of the Moody Land" was only a story, not based on a real place. Haroun is shocked that his father would utter the words, "Only a story."
