very important function of chromosomes is to protect the genetic material (DNA) from being damaged during cell division. Chromosomes are coated with histones and other proteins which protect it from both chemical (e.g., enzymes) and physical forces.

Chromosomes are thread-like structures located inside the nucleus of animal and plant cells. Each chromosome is made of protein and a single molecule of deoxy ribonucleic acid (DNA)
