After reading the story, one may conclude that the astrologer is resourceful, quick-witted, and charismatic.

First, he manages to charm his customers by flattering them and appealing to their vanity. He never denigrates his customers or insults them in any way. When a customer has a difficult personality, the astrologer merely tells the customer that the stars have determined his nature. The astrologer's charismatic personality endears him to his customers, and he is able to earn a living from doling out advice to needy souls.

The astrologer is also resourceful and quick-witted. When the man he meant to kill years ago comes to him as a customer, the astrologer maintains his composure. He coolly negotiates a good price for his services. Then, he sets to work. Because the astrologer already knows the man, he finds it relatively easy to tell the latter's "fortune."

The astrologer proceeds to reveal that the man was stabbed, pushed into a well, and left for dead many years ago. Had a passerby not peeked into the well, the man would be dead today. Then, the astrologer divulges that his customer's name is Guru Nayak. Of course, the astrologer's revelations astound Guru Nayak.

However, the astrologer is not yet finished. When Guru Nayak reveals that he is seeking to kill the man who stabbed him, the astrologer quickly reassures Nayak that the man is dead. Dramatically, the astrologer "reveals" that Nayak's nemesis was crushed under a lorry (truck). He then warns Nayak against ever stepping foot in the village again. Instead, Nayak must return home if he wants to preserve his life. The astrologer maintains that Nayak puts his life in danger by staying.

At the end of the story, we learn that the astrologer is the one who stabbed Guru Nayak many years ago. Because of his quick wit, charisma, and resourceful nature, the astrologer is able to protect both his life and his reputation.
