when we first meet Matilda in the poem The Necklace, we see a pretty but rather discolsolate young woman.Although she is married to a man who adores her, she is quite unhappy that he is only a government clerk and cannot afford to give her the lifestyle that she covets.
Matilda envious nature doesnt allow her to see the good things she has in life, such as a very loving husband, her youthfull beauty and her ability to charm others.
