The narrator, a 15 year old boy, is an experienced thief. He introduce himself as Hari Singh to Anil but this is not his real name.The narrator comes to work for Anil and starts stealing small amounts of money from him. He learns to write his name and is keen to learn more from Anil. When he sees 600 rupees, hi plants to steal it. He is hesitant as he knows Anil would be sad to see his trust had been broken but decides to go ahead as he finds Anil careless with money. But after stealing the money, he guilt ridden and realise that he wants to lead a clean and respectable life. He comes back to Anil to learn to read and write. Hence, we do from impression of the narrator that circumstance made him a thief what is goodness was more effective than his conditions and therefore he took new path that day onwards.
