Ans : We have formed quite a bad

impression of the banker. He is a selfish,

impulsive and unpredictable person. The

events that unfold in the story depict his

nature completely. In the beginning he

upholds the merit of death penalty and

bets the lawyer two million roubles if he

completes fifteen year term in

imprisonment. He believes that capital punishment is more humane than life

imprisonment as it kills in one go. But

when the banker falls on bad terms, he

repents his decision and decides to kill the

lawyer. Thus, he cannot be trusted as a

man of sound principles. He is therefore a

headstrong and unpredictable person who

also lacks in morals and principles.
