An indicator is a substance which changes its characteristic such as smell and color to indicate the presence of an acidic substance or a basic substance.

For example, litmus paper changes its color to red in acidic medium while it changes to blue in basic medium.

Indicators are of three types:

(a) Natural indicators- Indicators which are derived from natural sources. Such as turmeric, red cabbage, etc.

(b) Synthetic indicators- Indicators which are made by man in laboratories. Such as litmus paper, methyl orange, etc.

(c) Olfactory indicators- Indicators which change their color to indicate the presence of an acidic or basic medium. Such as onion extract, vanilla extract, etc.
