What in your opinion was the reason for abstaining women from active participation in politics/election? How do you associate women’s role in politics in the present context?

The term 'political participation' has a very wide meaning. It is not only related to 'Right to Vote', but simultaneously relates to participation in: decision-making process, political activism, political consciousness, etc. Women in India participate in voting, run for public offices and political parties at lower levels more than men. Political activism and voting are the strongest areas of women's political participation.[1] To combat gender inequality in politics, the Indian Governmenthas instituted reservations for seats in local governments.

Education. This is such that most women are always viewed as  illiterate and they are always restricted from getting education. This is because their role is perceived to be that of home and not in politics. Women are always told to stay at home to do domestic chores. This contributes to lower self esteem in women and therefore fewer participation of women in politics. Another factor is the gender inequality in the society. This is when male gender is perceived to be superior than the other. As a result, gender ratio that is not balanced results in politics participation.
