An object & its molecules absorb energy when they are heated and their temperature raises. This heat energy is converted into the kinetic energy of the molecules and atomic particles. The molecules can vibrate, move to more distances. The bonds & attractions between molecules becomes smaller. they get more separated.  so the material expands and increases in volume.
