Cotton textile and Jute industries are major industries in India during British rule. Metal industries like iron and steel also started on commercial scale after some time. Wood based industries like saw mills, ply boards and particle boards also established in forest regions. Rice mills, oil mills and paper mills also established in many states. Sugar mills , oil cakes, bone mills, and leather tanneries were also established in many states. Tea plantation, Coffee plantation, Spice plantation and Tobacco plantation became popular in some states. Making of agricultural implements also took the form of industry in some places.
