what information do we learn about the "lottery" devised by portia father
Answers
Portia's father was a pious man. He wanted his daughter to marry a man suitable for her. He devised a lottery system, in which the suitor had to choose from three caskets. The caskets were in gold, silver and lead materials. Befor choosing, the suitors had to give three promises in return for a chance to have a chance at the lottery. The promises were:
1. Never to reveal their choice of caskets to anyone.
2. If the wrong casket was choosen, then leave immidiately.
3. If the wrong casket was choosen, then never to woo another lady in way of marriage.
If the suitors agreed, they had to choose from the three caskets. Each casket had the following inscriptions:
Golden - "who chooseth me shall get what many men desire."
Silver - "who chooseth me shall gain was he deserves."
Lead - "who chooseth me shall risk all he hath."
Hope this helps,
