X-ray diffraction is useful for a lot of things. Some them are:
Using diffraction pattern of compounds to provide information about their crystalline structure.
Using concepts of X-ray optics this can be used analysing thin films, crystalline phases as well as stress and strain.
Measuring the sample’s purity (to some degree)
Mineral determination
Measurement of dimensions of the unit cell that comprises the structure.
