LORD DALHOUSIE'S DOCTRINE OF LAPSE
.According to the Doctrine of Lapse, the rulers or native princes could not appoint their adopted sons on the throne.
.This was opposed by Nana Sahib, the adopted son of Peshwa Bajirao2.
.Rani Lakshmi Bai was also prevented from putting her adopted son on the throne.
.The successors of Bahadur Shah Zafar were not allowed to use their imperial titles and furthermore, they would not be allowed to use the historic Red Fort as their palace.
