To be precise, its easy to use scientific notation, so that 3,482 expressed in only 2 significant figures after rounding off will be 3.5 × 10³.

Now, when 3,482 is rounded to two significant figures, it  turns 3,500. One has to count 2 digits from left, and if the 3rd digit is 5 and above, round it off up to zero and add 1 to the second digit. The result will then be 3,500.

Hope it helps!

Thank you for asking this question my friend.

3,482 when converted into two significant figures it becomes 3500 or 3.5 × 10³

The explanation is as follows:

we have to use the rule of rounding off. Which states that we have to count from the right side of the number. If the 4th digit (in this case 2) is 5 or greater than 5 then round up to zero and add number 1 to the 3rd digit. The same procedure is to be followed with the 3rd digit and by adding number 1 to second digit it becomes 5 instead of 4. Hence, then the result will be 3500.
