Atoms are very small particles so there actual mass is very small and it is difficult to determine their actual mass. Therefore it is found convenient to determine its mass with some reference. The masses thus obtained are called as relative atomic masses.
Relative Atomic Mass is the average mass of the atoms of an element as compared to 1/2 the mass of one C-12 atom.
The references which were chosen earlier was hydrogen because of its lighter weight but while using hydrogen it was found that masses of atoms of other element came to be fractional therefore the reference was shifted to oxygen.
Atomic Mass Unit (A.M.U) may be defined as mass of C-12/12 atom.
Avagardo's Number :
1 mole is a collection of 6.022×10^23 particles. These particles can be atoms, molecules, ions etc.
Example : 1 mole of hydrogen atom = 6.022×10^23 atoms of hydrogen.
Example : 1 mole of hydrogen molecule = 6.022×10^23 molecules of hydrogen.
