Bacteriophages are a specific type of viruses that infect bacteria and reproduces post entry into the host.

Explanation:

  • Phages or bacteriophages are viruses that specifically replicate and infect archaea and bacteria.
  • Outside the host, these viruses act as non-living objects but when they enter the host, they begin a lysogenic cycle through which the bacterial host cells get destroyed when repeated virions are created inside it.
  • Once the host cell breaks apart the virions are released into the atmosphere and can infect new hosts upon contact.
