A balanced chemical equation has equal number of atom on both sides of the arrow ( i.e. the reactant and the product side). This should be done because of law of conservation of mass by Antoine Lavoisier , the law states that atoms can neither be created nor destroyed in a chemical reaction, so the number of atoms that are present in the reactants has to balance the number of atoms that are present in the products.
