Biosphere reserve

A multi- purpose protected area which is developed to conserve biodiversity and also to educate, train and create awareness about environmental aspects and eco-friendly living is. called a biosphere reserve.

There are 18 biosphere reserves in India. Some of the well-known biosphere reserves set up in our country are:-

  • Nilgiri biosphere reserve
  • Nanda Devi biosphere reserve
  • Sunderban biosphere reserve
  • Gulf of Mannar biosphere reserve

A biosphere reserve may also contain other protected areas in it. For example:- Pachmarhi biosphere reserve consists of one national park named Satpura and two wildlife sanctuaries named Bori and Pachmarhi.

Red data book:- The book which keeps a record of all endangered animals, plants and other species is called Red data book. Red Data book is being published in many different countries and provides useful information on the status of various species. Through this book, IUCN (Now WCU) is trying to create awareness about endangered species. First Red data book of animals was published in 1991.

There's a single Red Data Book which is for Flora and Fauna.

Some of the critically endangered species:-

  • Himalayan Brown (Ursus arctos isabellinus)

  • Asiatic Lion

  • Andaman White-toothed Shrew (Crocidura andamanensis)

  • Large Rock Rat (Cremnomys elvira)

  • Sumatran Rhinoceros (Dicerorhinus sumatrensis)
