Bohr model of an atom

Electrons revolve round the nucleus in a fixed orbit.

He called these orbits as ‘stationary orbit’.

Each stationary orbit is associated with fixed amount of energy, thus electrons do not radiate energy as long as they keep on revolving around the nucleus in fixed orbit.

The circular path around the nucleus is called orbit, energy level or shell. Energy level are represented by letter – K, L, M, N, …. and so on.

Therefore,

1st orbit is denoted by – K

2nd orbit is denoted by – L

3rd orbit is denoted by – M, and so on.

The orbits are denoted by 1, 2, 3, …. and so on

Bohr's atomic model was put forward by Niels bohr and in relation to the model of an atom he gave two postulates :

● only certain special orbits known as discrete orbits of electrons, are allowed inside the atom.

● while revolving in discrete orbits the electrons do not radiate energy.

After the failure of Rutherford Model of an atom Niels bohr put forward his model of atom and he gave the name of energy levels to the orbits or shells that he defined in his atom model.

He gave descriptions about the K, L, M, N energy levels of an atom. These orbits or shells are represented by numbers, n=1,2,3,4,.....
