NCERT based Answer for Class 11 Biology Students

Cell Cycle : The sequence of events by which a cell duplicates its genome, synthesizes other constituents of cell and divides into two daughter cells is called cell cycle.

Note: Events of cell cycle are under genetic control.

Interphase: Period in cell cycle during which cell prepares for cell division. Events of Interphase are cell growth and DNA replication.

Characteristics of Interphase:

Metabolically cell is very active.

Nucleus and nucleolus are prominent.

Chromosomes are not visible; instead there is long, coiled network of chromatin.

Cell grows in size and chromatin material duplicates.

G1 Phase (Gap 1): It is interval between mitosis and initiation of DNA replication.

Features:

Metabolically cell is highly active and grows continuously.

RNA and proteins are synthesized.

S phase (Synthesis): Period during which DNA replication takes place.

Features:

DNA content of cell gets doubled.

Chromosomes number of cell remains same.

In animal cells, centriole duplicates in the cytoplasm.

G2 Phase (Gap 2): Period between completion of DNA synthesis and mitosis. Proteins required for cell division are synthesized.

M phase: Phase when actual cell division or mitosis occurs. Duplicated chromosomes are distributed equally to daughter cells.

Events:

· Karyokinesis (Karyo : Nucleus; Kinesis : Division)

· Cytokinesis (Cyto : Cytoplasm; Kinesis : Division)
