Answer:
Central tendency is a statistical measure used to identify a single value of the entire population or a dataset, it reflects the center of data distribution. It was first coined in the 1920s.
- It is one of the most important and basic elements of statistics.
- It is comprehensive.
- It does not provide the data on an individual data set but as a whole.
Central tendency consists of the following measures such as :
- Mean: It represents the sum of the whole data set divided by the total number of values.
- Median: It represents the middle value in an arranged set of data.
Note: The data must be arranged in either ascending or descending order.
3. Mode: It represents the maximum number of times occurring value in a data set.
There are more tools in central tendency like geometric mean, harmonic mean, mid-range, and geometric median.
- Explanation: The reason we use central tendency is as follows:-
- It is easy to obtain and less complex in nature
- It serves as a basis for all the statistical tools.
- Mean is a good option for ordinal sets of data.
- It is more resistant to change and not flexible in nature.
- One can make use of all the data available in the set.
