Chromo means colour and soma means body. So, chromosomes take up certain basic dye or stains very rapidly. Basically chromosomes are the chromatin material inside the nucleus. Chromosomes consist of histone proteins and DNA. During cell division, different stages are distinguished on the basis of location and shape of chromosomes. The term chromosome was first coined by Waldeyer in 1888.
