The coliform bacteria live in the intestines of warm-blooded animals, including humans . These are not themselves necessarily harmful but are considered indicators of water contamination. Their presence in water suggests fecal contamination, which can contain pathogens, including harmful strains of  cholera, salmonella, E. coli and hepatitis. Thus coliform bacteria are the group of microorganisms that as indicators of disease causing microbes in water.
