The gridiron pendulum was a temperature-compensated clockpendulum invented by British clockmaker John Harrison around 1726 and later modified by John Ellicott. It was used in precision clocks. In ordinary clockpendulums, the pendulum rod expands and contracts with changes in temperature.

A pendulum in which the effect of changes of temperature of the length of the rod is so counteracted usually by opposite expansion of difference metals
